Codes and Ciphers Introduction
Codes and Ciphers SIG is about language and communication, so our nearest ally on the SIG Scene is LinguaSIG. We communicate. We also hide your secret stuff. In between, you are treated to literature and history.
Codes and Ciphers SIG is not for muggles.
For the delectation of Word Puzzlers
ACRONYM ANAGRAM ISOGRAM PANGRAM
1. We are into nyms and grams:
What is the acronym from
Light Amplification and Stimulated Emission of Radiation?
2. You know this from crosswords:
It is not safe around grand ouse (9)
3. What property do these words have in common:
atmospheric, uncopyrightable, countryside, dangerously
4. How many letters of the alphabet does this phrase contain? Ignore repeats:
sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow
More Word Play
Back to acronyms: you can stretch them to make other words with dummy fillings. Fuff und Fass? How do I turn North Atlantic Treaty Organisation into NIVEA TORNADO? You can even write cod language (fake or junk).
Acrostic Telestic (Le Chiffre Sandwich)
This mess in Cod Latin hides a message in English.
DOMINO NOVO TENET EQUAL LAM URBEG GELL ERES TANITH AMBIT YORRO ULTIMA RERAE INSULIN MEME NOS APEX
The final X is a null to make up an even number of letters. This is an old form of cipher which may appeal to word gamers. Send me a note in this method. It is a quick way to fool muggles
Reading and Writing Backwards
This is the simplest example of transposition:
WRITE BACKWARDS.
.thgin of loohcs eht dna snoegnud fo euh ehT / lleh fo egdab eht si kcalB
Can you do this with numbers?
01902 772771 backwards 177277 20910
Now, clever clogs, how do I make this transformation:
622722 75465

San Paper supports the Neilson Hays Library
Halloween Every Night
Everywhere the unseen is waiting to show itself - for good and ill.
Ghosts and Spirits
Thai Ghosts is a small e-book that describes the terrors by night - and by day.
Bazaar Ladies
The oldest English language library in Bangkok, it survived the war and the internment of its staff. After a century, the building required complete restoration and refurbishment - which was achieved by private donation and public subscription.
A brief history of the Neilson Hays Library in Bangkok
Founded in 1868 as a simple lending library, in 1922 Dr Hays created the neo-classical building we see today. It is a listed Historical Site.
The picture below links to a Simple Booklet outlining the library's history.
Simple Square Cipher
A pen and paper puzzle for simple messages which is quick and easy but not secure. It is for use among Muggles and is good for brief and temporary messages.
Five Square Starter
The Magic Square wherein numbers sum to the same figure in rows and columns - and even diagonally - has been a curiosity for centuries. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim provided this Square of Mars that sums to 5 x 13 in all directions using the numbers 1 to 25. He served as a secretary to the Holy Roman Emperor Karl V.
Put letters into the square in the sequence 1 to 25 and you have a cipher jumble:
EESUP HTSEI NESAC RSCER RRQIS
This is not really easy or practical. There are other arrangements of 25 letters in a 5 x 5 square. Have a look at this SIMPLE NOTE.

Acrostic Cipher
Abbot Trithemius wrote about secret messages. He invented STEGANOGRAPHY.
Too Simple For Words
Trithemius wrote a wicked book in about 1496: STEGANOGRAPHIA.
He gave methods of hiding texts within texts; some of which are tedious. The Holy Inquisition visited him to ascertain whether he practiced magic. Steganographia circulated in manuscript for over a century and attracted the attention of scholars such as John Dee and Francis Bacon.
Here is an Acrostic-Telestic cipher message written in Cod Latin.
